Explanation

Let each of the three equal parts be d km. Time = d/3 + d/5 + d/8 = d(40 + 24 + 15)/120 = 79d/120 hours, and 39.5 min = 79/120 hour. So d = 1 km and the total distance = 3 × 1 = 3 km.
