At present, X is 3 times as old as Y. II. X and Y started schooling in the same year. III. After 5 years, the age of X will be 2 (1/2) times that of Y.

  1. Both statements I and II are sufficient.

  2. Both statements II and III are sufficient.

  3. Only statement I is sufficient.

  4. Both statements I and III are sufficient.

Show answer & explanation

Answer: (D) Both statements I and III are sufficient.

Explanation

From I, X = 3Y. From III, X + 5 = 2.5(Y + 5). Substituting: 3Y + 5 = 2.5Y + 12.5, so Y = 15. Statement II is irrelevant; I and III together are sufficient.
