Reason (R): Warren Hastings was himself a great scholar and an ardent orientalist who used to encourage the study of Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic. 1. Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
  2. Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)
  3. (A) is true, but (R) is false
  4. (A) is false, but (R) is true
Show answer & explanation

Answer: (B) Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)

Explanation

Per the official key, both are true but R is not the correct explanation. Hastings patronised oriental learning, but that does not explain why he declined the presidency in favour of Sir William Jones.
